How To Stop My Muscles Cramping?

I think we’ve all experienced a muscle cramp from time to time, but do you know what is actually causing it and what you can do to remedy and prevent them?

What causes a muscle cramp?

During a cramp your muscles are suddenly contracting and spasming.   Ranging from rather uncomfortable to downright debilitating.

Overuse of a muscle, dehydration, muscle strain or simply holding a position for a prolonged period can cause a muscle cramp.  Muscle Cramp

Calcium contracts the muscle.  Magnesium relaxes.

So if there is not enough magnesium in supply the muscle will spasm between contraction and relaxation causing the cramp.

Remedies for muscle cramps:

  • Stretch and massage the affected muscle
  • Take a warm bath to relax your muscles
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Increase magnesium stores

Ways to increase magnesium stores:

Supplement with a good quality magnesium supplement.   This is one of my favourites in Australia, and I love these ones available in the States and the UK.  Orthoplex Mag Opticell

Depending on your needs you will need to supplement somewhere between 200mg – 800mg per day.

Other signs of Magnesium Deficiency:

  • Reduced ability to cope with stress
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Chocolate cravings
  • Eye twitches
  • Fibromyalgia

So simple, so underrated

I love magnesium.   As a Naturopath I am pretty in tune with my body and what it wants and needs.   There is no one supplement I am always taking, but I do always have magnesium in the cupboard for when I feel I need it.   If I feel a cramp, I am actually already too low (similar to thirst and dehydration).   So I will get on the magnesium for a couple days to restock my stores and carry on my merry way.

So simple, so underrated.   Get on it.
